A functional style of behavior is one of the basic functions of behavior that teachers and other educators consider the most important factor when determining how students learn and behave. The five functions are Dominance, Influence, Steadiness, Compliance, and Flexibility. These are also considered to be the core functions of personality when they pertain to a person’s preferences and social settings.
The first aspect of this basic function is Dominance. Dominance is defined as the ability to gain control over another person or people. This aspect of behavior relates to what is commonly known as assertive behaviour. Students who exhibit high levels of Dominance are known to be more confident, determined, goal-oriented, and self-reliant. A high level of Dominance can also lead to inappropriate behaviour such as bullying, violence, disobedience, and anger.
The second aspect is Influence. This aspect of behavior is related to the process by which individuals make choices and the impact these choices have on others. Those who have higher levels of Influence are able to control the direction of their relationships with others take and the level of control that they have. This type of function is also related to establishing positive behavior in a situation. Students who exhibit higher levels of Influence are known to be more likely to take risks and engage in alternative ways of getting what they want or need.
The third basic function is Availability. This is an intervention that occurs in the setting of an event and is designed to address the undesirable behaviour. For example, if a student refuses to behave properly during a test, a behaviour modification program might be used. The same goes for if they repeatedly skip classes. In the same way, interventions addressing anti-social behaviour can be termed as behavior interventions.
When considering a behaviour modification or time-out intervention, consider the potential impact on the child’s other interests, social settings, and daily activities. If time-out results in disrupting an important group or individual setting, it may be counterproductive to promote positive behaviour. Likewise, if a time-out leads to escalating and increasingly inappropriate behaviour, it may be pointless because these are the outcomes that you would like to avoid. It is important to recognise that most children can adapt to suitable interventions and that prolonged time-outs will only exacerbate any disruptive behaviour.
Basic Functions of Behavior: Recognizing and Getting Something Done
One of the key components of behavior is its basic functions. In order to fully understand human behavior, we must be able to recognize, analyze and mimic it. In fact, when we are able to do this, we can then teach it as well as motivate and inspire the same in others. It takes some level of ability to understand basic functions of behavior if you are going to be able to motivate and inspire people in any setting. However, it does not mean that all you need to do is mimic the behaviors of those around you.
There are many basic functions of behavior that include avoiding, recognizing, getting something done, listening, following instructions, taking action and many more. All these are interrelated but also independent at times. For instance, when we understand how to avoid something that is bothering us, we do not necessarily avoid from doing it. We recognize that what we are avoiding would lead us into doing something else that could solve the problem. Likewise, when we recognize that getting something done is better than not doing anything at all, we can then immediately start doing it.
When you are dealing with a problem, one of the first things that you should be able to do is to recognize it and then start looking for a solution. If you can do this, then you have already started on your way to motivating others as well as yourself.
