Understanding the functions of nonverbal behavior in the workplace is crucial to organizational development. This paper is a review and agenda for research on non-verbal communication and its role in organizations. This article addresses the issues related to message conveying, non-verbal social communication, emotional intelligence, job satisfaction, and leadership. In this article, we discuss how to understand the functions of nonverbal behavior. We shall review the importance of non-verbal communication in an organization and how it can be used to its maximum advantage. Finally, we shall discuss some of the practical applications of this research.
The functions of nonverbal behavior and communication in the workplace is a growing field with a number of important implications for organizational development. An organization’s performance in various tasks and goals depends largely on how well it communicates with its people. Organizations now face a greater variety of challenges to which they need to respond. In order to remain competitive, organizations have to develop and implement effective communication strategies. This has become all the more necessary given the increased globalisation and changes in business and communication practices.
Organizations have to communicate efficiently with their employees in order to perform their tasks. Effective use of nonverbal communications, including speech, hand signals, and body language, has emerged as a fundamental requirement for successful communication. Most studies show that effective communication involves three elements namely, communicative behavior, appropriate internal and external cues, and control. The processes of communication are divided into two main categories, oral and visual information transmission. It is argued that effective communication involves all these three elements in varying degrees depending on the type of communication being used.
A second important function of nonverbal communication is to increase awareness of an individual. Nonverbal behaviors are very powerful tools that help people gather information about others. This ability is also important in preventing misunderstandings. Researchers have found that the use of gestures, facial expressions and other non-verbal behaviors such as head movements, eye contact and other movements can be effective ways of getting the attention of the target group.
Another important function of nonverbal communication is to facilitate close relationships between people. Such close relationships are highly crucial for organizational life. These relationships are also necessary for conflict resolution, resolving issues and resolving problems. A good example of an organization’s non-verbal communication is its employees. Employees play a very important role in the organizational life as they interact with each other in day to day activities.
Verbal messages may be complex or short, but nonverbal behaviors have a bigger impact on the listener than written words. They can make a big difference in how you perceive an issue, how you talk to another person and how you build a relationship with them. In order to communicate effectively, one should be aware of the various types of communication like facial gestures, speech level communication, body language and tone of voice. By understanding these types, it is possible to use them properly to express messages in a non-verbal way.

This paper is a comprehensive, integrated review of various non-verbal behaviors and communications specifically geared toward workplace and organization situations. The paper utilizes five perspectives to compare and contrast the practices and principles of verbal and non-verbal communications to better understand their relations to organizational culture and practices, identify specific types of verbal communication that may be used for efficiency and effectiveness, and clarify how the use of non-verbal behaviors and communication may be modified for increased productivity and development.
The present article proceeds with an examination of four key areas of inquiry related to the study of the functions of nonverbal behavior and communication in organizations: cognitive aspects, interpersonal aspects, psychological aspects, and theoretical aspects. It then turns to a description of selected research models and selected themes and reviews of empirical work. Lastly, it concludes with a description and evaluation of promising frameworks and concepts that can enhance the practice of organizational leadership and improve employee and manager competencies.
Theoretical issues are reviewed related to the meaning and purposes of behavior and its representations in relation to various psychological aspects. Specifically, we noted seven general theoretical perspectives including culturalnormativity, social learning, dominance and assertive behavior, competence, negotiation/competition, leadership, and emotional intelligence. We also looked at two alternative perspectives from an organizational perspective, which include the antifriendliness or ‘vertical dimension’ and the organizational environment which includes cues and symbols.
